Western Maryland Area Health Education Center (WMAHEC) service areas are the Appalachian counties of Western Maryland - Allegany, Garrett, and Washington - and the surrounding tri-state area. Most of these areas are designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. We facilitate and/or provide: Clinical education for health professions students Health careers academic assistance, mentorship, and summer programs for high school students with follow-up throughout college, health professions school, and beyond Continuing education programs for regional health professionals Interdisciplinary courses and other programs on geriatrics and gerontology Learning resource services Organization of and participation in coalitions and task forces on priority concerns about health care And more! None of our activities would be possible without the support of our many partners--we do not provide health care, but we help to make it better by working with those who do. Major activities include: facilitating continuing education and training programs for regional health professionals. facilitating clinical education for health professions students and providing housing for rotations in the region (fees may apply). facilitating family and community medicine residency rotations in Western Maryland promoting interdisciplinary training and health practice facilitating interdisciplinary courses in geriatrics and gerontology and making resources available related to caring for the aged health workforce development activities, including programs to increase medical residents in Western Maryland health careers education for high school and college students promoting oral health preventive care and dental services for low-income and uninsured residents training on accessing Internet and print health resources, including disaster health resources training community health workers learning resources services organization of and participation in coalitions and task forces on priority concerns about health and healthcare, including regional health network development
