Programs that provide technical assistance, training and support to help other countries conserve endangered land, water, energy, wildlife and other natural resources; establish and enforce minimum standards for environmental quality which promote the health and well-being of the population; promote sustainable development; provide for the preservation of the country's historical, cultural and artistic heritage; and support other initiatives that protect and enhance the physical environment. Also included are programs that are involved in advocacy for or the development and management of international agreements that address global environmental issues such as atmospheric and marine pollution, acid rain, global climate change, chemicals and toxic substances, nuclear/hazardous waste disposal, rainforest destruction, fishing rights and overfishing, marine mammal protection and endangered species preservation.
