Galactosemia

A hereditary metabolic disorder that is characterized by an inability to convert galactose to glucose which causes anorexia, vomiting and diarrhea in affected individuals unless galactose and lactose are removed from the diet. Untreated children who survive starvation usually fail to grow, and have a lower level of intellectual functioning or developmental delay as well as a problem with cataracts.
